As the Muhammad Ali Center marks its 20th anniversary, Lonnie Ali, widow of legendary boxer and humanitarian Muhammad Ali, is honoring her late husband’s enduring legacy of compassion.
Speaking on the Today Show during the week that would have marked Muhammad Ali’s 83rd birthday, Lonnie Ali unveiled the inaugural 2025 Compassion Report, a bold initiative to address societal challenges by fostering compassion.
Honoring a Legacy of Kindness and Action
“Muhammad was one of the most compassionate human beings I think God put on this earth,” Lonnie Ali shared. “Compassion is an essential element of a healthy community. It’s not just a feeling—it’s actionable.”
The 2025 Compassion Report, developed by the Muhammad Ali Center, surveys 12 U.S. cities to measure compassion levels and offers strategies for communities to strengthen this vital quality.
Lonnie Ali spoke passionately about its importance, particularly in a time marked by social polarization, mental health struggles, and burnout.
Compassion in Action
Lonnie reflected on Muhammad Ali’s daily commitment to compassion, recounting stories of his generosity and empathy.
She stated:
“Whether it was signing autographs in a hurry or stopping to help someone in need, Muhammad made compassion a part of his life. He believed in service to others as the ‘rent you pay for your room here on Earth.’”
One memorable moment included Muhammad Ali giving all the money in his pocket to a stranger who appeared in need, exemplifying his belief in actionable kindness.
Continuing the Mission
Lonnie Ali has committed to carrying forward her husband’s vision.
“The way to fill the void of his loss is to continue his legacy and do the work he would be doing,” she said.
The center’s new Compassion Pledge invites individuals to commit to practicing compassion in their daily lives.
