Mother Whose Children Died In Minivan At Casino Parking Lot Faces Possible Charges Following New Information

The Detroit Police Department has submitted a warrant request seeking charges against Tateona Williams.

Williams is the mother of four whose two children tragically died last month while sleeping in a van inside a Greektown Casino parking structure.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is currently reviewing the request to determine whether charges will be filed, according to Fox 2 Detroit.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Feb. 10, when Williams and her five children, who were experiencing homelessness, were staying in their minivan.

That morning, Williams discovered that one of her children was unresponsive.

The vehicle had run out of gas overnight, leaving the family exposed to freezing temperatures. A relative rushed the child to the hospital, but before Williams could process the unfolding crisis, she received a devastating call—another child had also stopped breathing.

Initially, authorities suspected that the children may have succumbed to hypothermia, but the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that carbon monoxide poisoning was the official cause of death.

Investigators believe the toxic fumes may have entered the van due to its prolonged idling before running out of fuel.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths as the prosecutor considers potential charges against Williams.

Williams’ tragedy gained national attention after her children, Amillah Currie, 2, and Darnell Currie, 9, died when the van they were living in apparently ran out of gas.

Williams subsequently was gifted a home by  Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) and the city of Detroit.
