It turns out the movie “Sinners” didn’t just depict hoodoo; it had actual hoodoo practices happening on set! Wunmi Mosaku, who played Annie in the film, dropped this bombshell, and it’s got everyone talking!

The movie “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, delves into themes of ethnicity, Southern culture, and the power of ancestral traditions like hoodoo. In the film, a character uses hoodoo to help her community. But here’s the kicker: Wunmi Mosaku revealed that a real hoodoo priestess was present to help get the script right.

Mosaku, the Nigerian-British actress known for her powerhouse performances, plays Annie in Sinners, a character deeply rooted in ancestral traditions. But what fans didn’t expect was for the actress herself to dive into the world of hoodoo headfirst.

According to Mosaku, she wasn’t just playing a character. She was doing her research. And that meant bringing in the real deal.

Wunmi Mosaku shared in an interview that “Hoodoo is a real practice, and we had a hoodoo consultant. And I spoke to hoodoo priestesses. So, it is very much rounded, real, and practiced. And I think he has really treated it with as much respect and honor as possible because I do feel like the Western world media has kind of shown us like a really dark side of voodoo.”

The revelation has left fans completely stunned and conspiracy theorists working overtime. Some are calling it “method acting gone spiritual,” while others are genuinely freaked out. One thing’s for sure: Sinners just got way more intense than anyone expected.

Through the lens of hoodoo, Ryan Coogler, Black Panther mastermind, paints a powerful narrative of healing, heritage, and survival. And with Mosaku’s character, Annie, using her ancestral practice to protect and uplift her community, the film flips the “voodoo = evil” trope on its head.

“I didn’t know it was such a healing, loving, spiritual, connected practice,” Mosaku said. “I feel so empowered and inspired by the people I met during my research. And so yes, she (Annie) is very real, and that practice is real. I guess the thing that isn’t real is the vampires.”

So, whether you’re here for the horror, the heritage, or the hoodoo, Sinners is officially the film to watch and talk about for all the right (and spooky) reasons.
