Shonda Rhimes, the prolific creator behind hits like Scandal and Bridgerton, has resigned from the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees. The decision comes as President Donald Trump assumes control of the renowned performing arts institution.

On Wednesday, February 12, a representative for the television executive, 55, stated that the creator of Grey’s Anatomy has stepped down from her position as treasurer of the Kennedy Center.

Her decision follows a controversial shake-up led by Trump, who has removed board members appointed by President Joe Biden and replaced them with his own allies. With Trump now installed as chairman and his close associate, Ric Grenell, acting as interim president, the Kennedy Center’s leadership has drastically transformed, aligning it with Trump’s vision.

The newly formed board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, made up of President Trump’s allies, voted on Wednesday to appoint him as chairman and dismissed the center’s longtime president, Deborah F. Rutter.

President Trump shared his new role on Truth Social, stating, “It is a Great Honor to be Chairman of The Kennedy Center, especially with this amazing Board of Trustees. We will make The Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place!”

Trump’s appointment occurred just days after the president expressed his desire to assume the role of chairman and terminate board members who did not align with his vision for “a golden age in arts and culture.” This announcement led to confusion at the Kennedy Center, which stated at that time that it had not been informed of any impending changes.

Shonda Rhimes’ resignation is unsurprising, given her outspoken support for Kamala Harris during the 2024 election and her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These values have been central to her work, including the globally acclaimed series Bridgerton.

Rhimes confirmed her resignation in a post on her Instagram page, sharing a poignant quote from John F. Kennedy:” ‘If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.’ – John F Kennedy.”

Shonda Rhimes is not the only board member who has declared their departure. Earlier today, Ben Folds also stated that he is stepping down from his position as artistic adviser of the National Symphony Orchestra. A short while later, Renée Fleming echoed this by announcing her intention to resign from her artistic adviser role.
