The Tuskegee University community is in mourning following the sudden death of Jade Callwood, a 21-year-old senior who died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026, after an unexpected medical emergency, according to university officials.

Callwood, an African American student from Conyers, Georgia, was pursuing a degree in Environmental, Resources, and Plant Sciences.

Tuskegee University President Dr. Mark A. Brown expressed condolences on behalf of the institution, stating there is collective grief felt across campus.

“The grief we feel in this moment is shared across our campus community and by all who knew her both here and at home,” Brown said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to Jade’s family, loved ones, classmates, and all who were touched by her presence.”

In response to the loss, the university expanded mental health and counseling services to support students, faculty, and staff. Counselors were made available in the campus chapel, and students were reminded they could access 24-hour virtual mental health support through TimelyCare.

Callwood’s academic focus in environmental and plant sciences placed her among a generation of students preparing to address critical issues related to sustainability, agriculture, and natural resource management. Friends and classmates described her as driven, compassionate, and committed to her studies.

As of publication, funeral and memorial service arrangements have not been announced. Tuskegee University officials said they will share additional information as it becomes available.
