Tiwa Savage stirred up discussion recently when she shared that she has never walked away from a relationship due to cheating.
During her guest appearance on The Receipts podcast with hosts Tolly T and Audrey, the 44-year-old “Somebody’s Son” singer openly discussed what prompts her to end a relationship. Surprisingly, cheating wasn’t among her reasons.
“I have never left a man because he cheated on me,” Tiwa revealed. “I’ve left due to so many reasons, like drug abuse, emotional abuse, and being ghosted.”
She elaborated that to her, emotional neglect and substance abuse are much more significant betrayals than physical infidelity. “Those are the things that truly break me,” she added, noting that her perspective on relationships has evolved with age.
However, social media users were quick to voice their skepticism. The announcement sparked a split reaction online, with several fans calling out Tiwa for what they perceived as inconsistent messaging. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “Dear Tiwa, cheating is emotional abuse. Cheating comes in different forms. Financial, physical, emotional, and mental.”
Another commenter expressed frustration, stating, “But that same man will leave you without thinking twice!” Some pointed out that Tiwa’s divorce from her ex-husband, Tunji “TeeBillz” Balogun, was reportedly related to infidelity accusations. “Make it make sense, sis,” one fan questioned. “You said you don’t leave for cheating, but left because of emotional abuse, isn’t that connected?”
Tiwa and TeeBillz’s 2013 wedding was a lavish affair that grabbed everyone’s attention in Lagos. However, their marriage fell apart amid claims of infidelity and emotional strife, culminating in an official divorce in 2018 in which Tiwa gained custody of their son, Jamil.
Despite facing criticism, some fans came to the singer’s defense, suggesting her viewpoint reflects growth and maturity. They argued that staying in a relationship after cheating doesn’t necessarily show weakness but rather an understanding of love’s complexities and the possibility of forgiveness.
One supporter commented, “Tiwa’s been through a lot. Maybe she’s just saying there’s more to relationships than cheating, and she’s not wrong.”
Love her perspective or not, the Queen of Afrobeats knows how to keep the conversation lively.
