A popular social media influencer is urging Black women to rethink their hair choices, warning that rising tariffs on Chinese imports could make wigs and extensions significantly more expensive in the near future.
In a viral video, the Shashe (@lifewithsashejanell on TikTok) —who previously worked in the wig industry—delivered a passionate message to her followers, saying:
“To my Black women, consider going natural. Locks, curly naturals, loose naturals—whatever you wanna call it. Y’all, China’s already preparing for them tariffs. Y’all think wig prices are high as giraffe coochie now? Chile, just wait.”
The influencer shared that her industry connections in China have confirmed that manufacturers are planning to raise prices on wigs, extensions, and related hair products in response to anticipated tariffs.
“I was just talking to somebody over there earlier. They are definitely talking about marking the prices of wigs and extensions up. And I’m talking about up-up,” she added.
Stock Up Now or Go Natural?
She urged followers to stock up on their favorite wigs, extensions, and hair products while prices remain somewhat stable.
“I’m telling y’all now, stock up on your wigs, stock up on your extensions, stock up on your products that you love because they’re gonna get expensive. And I’m not talking about a little bit expensive. I’m talking about a lot-bit,” she stressed.
The warning has sparked discussion across social media, with some users expressing concern over how increased prices could impact those who rely on wigs for convenience, protective styling, or medical reasons.
Others are embracing the call to go natural, seeing it as an opportunity to celebrate and showcase their natural textures.
Impact of Tariffs on the Hair Industry
The U.S. government has previously placed tariffs on various Chinese goods, including beauty and hair products, as part of broader trade disputes.
Many hair extensions and wigs are manufactured in China, meaning any tariff increases could drive up costs for both businesses and consumers.
With inflation already affecting the beauty industry, some hairstylists and entrepreneurs are bracing for a shift in the market. If prices soar as expected, the influencer’s advice may become more than just a warning—it could signal a new era of natural hair embracing out of necessity rather than choice.
