Annie Mae Belin, a spirited 105-year-old from Darlington, became a national sensation three years ago after sharing her secret to longevity: minding her own business.
During her 102nd birthday celebration in 2021, Belin revealed her philosophy, which has resonated with people across the country.
“Trying to tend to my business and leave other people’s business alone. Unless I have to get in it. Because I love to talk and I love people,” Belin told WPDE, a statement that quickly went viral.
Her candid advice was a lesson passed down from her mother, stressing the importance of focusing on oneself and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.
As she recently celebrated her 105th birthday, surrounded by friends and family, Belin reflected on her journey. Despite experiencing some aches and pains, she remains thankful for her life and the joy of connecting with others.
“I never meant for my comment to go viral, but I’m glad it did. It could help resolve a lot of conflicts if you just mind your own business,” she explained to ABC15.
Belin’s wisdom has sparked a wave of admiration, inspiring fans to create t-shirts featuring her famous quote. She emphasizes the value of peace, stating:
“If they want to talk, let them talk, and you just be quiet.”
If she finds herself in a conversation that doesn’t align with her values, she politely excuses herself to maintain her peace of mind.
Former Darlington Mayor Gloria Hines remains a close friend, visiting Belin regularly and cherishing their deep friendship. Belin credits her Christian faith as a guiding force through life’s challenges, reading the Bible daily to stay grounded.
