Serena Williams’ latest appearance has stopped the internet in its tracks. This week, the tennis icon shared a casual mirror selfie on Instagram, and the reaction was instant.

In a recent mirror selfie that has sent shockwaves through social media, the mother of two appeared noticeably slimmer, sparking a wave of concern and conversation among fans who hardly recognize the powerhouse they’ve cheered for since the nineties.

Many fans wondered aloud if she was okay.

The photo landed amid swirling conversation about Serena’s ongoing weight loss journey, one she has been unusually open about. Back in August 2025, Williams revealed that she had been using GLP-1 medication for weight loss after struggling to shed weight through diet and exercise following the births of her daughters, Olympia and Adira. It was a candid admission, especially for a Black woman whose body has been policed, praised, criticized, and dissected in public for most of her life.

At the time, Serena shared that she had been on the medication for nearly a year and had lost 34 pounds.
“I feel great,” she told People. “I feel really good and healthy. I feel light physically and light mentally.”

That sense of ease came up again and again when she spoke about the transformation. She talked about moving more freely, about joints that no longer hurt, about having the energy to be more active in her everyday life. Small things, she said, like getting down and standing back up, suddenly felt easier.

Serena’s relationship with her body has always been public, but rarely gentle. From early accusations that she was “too muscular” to constant commentary that framed her strength as something to explain or defend, she has spent decades navigating expectations no one else had to carry.
Fast-forward to now, and the conversation has shifted, but the scrutiny remains.

Days before sharing the photo, Serena spoke again with TODAY, confirming that she was still taking the medication and crediting it with improvements beyond weight loss. Her blood sugar and cholesterol levels, she said, were better. The benefits were measurable, but also deeply personal.
“It’s more about… not even the weight loss,” she explained. “It’s about longevity.”

Serena also shared that she plans to continue taking GLP-1 medication long-term, describing it as part of her health story rather than a temporary fix.

“I think, for me, GLP-1s are a lifetime thing,” she said. “It’s just a part of my story and a part of my health journey.”

Still, online reactions remain complicated. Seeing her visibly smaller has stirred unease for some fans who grew up seeing her strength as radical. Others argue that the discomfort says more about society than Serena herself.

Serena Williams, for her part, seems unbothered. She says she feels good. She says she feels healthy.
