Angela Simmons found herself at the center of controversy after sporting a gun-shaped purse at the 2024 BET Awards, prompting her to clarify her intentions and apologize for any offense caused.
Following the event, the 36-year-old daughter of Rev. Run from Run-D.M.C. took to Instagram to address the backlash she received for her choice of accessory.
In a video shared on her Instagram Story, Simmons addressed the issue directly.
“I see there’s been a lot of conversation about the purse I wore to the awards,” Simmons began. “I want to make it clear that I’m not a violent person. I’ve never been about violence.”
Acknowledging her personal history with gun violence, particularly the tragic loss of her ex-fiancé Sutton Tennyson in 2018, Simmons explained the personal significance of her choice.
“Gun violence is something that’s deeply personal to me. But I chose that purse because I thought it was cool and a fashion statement,” she continued. “I didn’t mean to upset anyone or cause controversy. I’m really sorry if it bothered anyone. That’s not who I am.”
Simmons, known for her entrepreneurial ventures and TV appearances, attended the Los Angeles event in a striking custom emerald green dress by Casze Atelier, complemented by the bedazzled pistol-shaped clutch.
The event honored Usher with a lifetime achievement award and featured performances from a host of celebrities.
Despite the unintended controversy, Simmons emphasized her peaceful nature and expressed regret over any offense taken by her choice of accessory.
