Office of Rep. Valerie Foushee

As the U.S. government grapples with the complexities of artificial intelligence, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee, representing Orange County, has been selected to contribute to these deliberations. Foushee is among the 24 House lawmakers appointed to a newly established bipartisan task force dedicated to exploring the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in American innovation. Announced by the House leadership, the task force aims to assess how the United States can foster AI advancements while also devising safeguards to address potential risks and threats.

In a statement released by her office regarding her appointment, Foushee emphasized the need for thoughtful regulation and oversight in navigating the swiftly evolving landscape of AI. She highlighted the transformative potential of AI across various sectors, acknowledging the significant contributions of scientists and researchers in her district towards the development of AI applications that prioritize ethical considerations and public welfare.

Foushee’s extensive experience, including her service on the House’s Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, positions her well to contribute meaningfully to the task force. She will be joined by other members of the science committee, including Suzanne Bonamici, Haley Stevens, Rich McCormick, Jay Obernolte, and Darrell Issa.

The announcement coincided with Foushee’s co-hosting of a roundtable discussion with local AI industry leaders and national technology figures, including the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Arati Prabhakar. Held at North Carolina Central University, the forum provided an opportunity for leaders from various levels of government to engage in discussions about potential guidance, partnerships, and necessary changes concerning AI.

Reflecting on the importance of such dialogues, Foushee emphasized the critical role of collaboration between government entities, industry experts, and local leaders in establishing federal frameworks that ensure responsible and safe advancement in the global AI industry.
