Essence Atkins, the beloved actress known for her timeless roles and youthful glow, recently revealed a deeply personal choice that has brought her clarity and peace.
In an interview with Madame Noire, the 52-year-old star shared that she has been celibate for the past four years, a decision she describes as life-changing.
“I keep saying it’s the Fountain of Peace,” Atkins explained. “What you intake needs to be peaceful, and what you put out needs to be peaceful.”
A Path to Purpose

Atkins, who describes herself as “super single,” views her celibacy as a purposeful journey.
“I believe there’s honor in what I’m doing, and my obedience is going to yield a great harvest,” she said.
For her, this decision has led to “tremendous clarity,” allowing her to assess relationships with a clear mind and heart, unclouded by physical distractions.
This intentional approach has also inspired Atkins to advocate for deeper, non-physical connections in relationships. She encouraged young women to prioritize self-worth and take time to understand their partners beyond surface-level attraction.
“It’s important that we value ourselves and make sure that others are valuing us,” Atkins shared. “Can you spend time with someone without physical companionship? Do they make you laugh? Are they joyful? Are they purposed? Are they responsible? Are they intentional? Learn that. Give yourself time and space to learn that.”
A Journey Rooted in Self-Love
Atkins, who shares a son with her ex-husband Jaime Mendez, has embraced this phase of her life as an opportunity to grow spiritually and emotionally.
Her story resonates with many women navigating the balance between self-love and societal expectations.
As a role model for Black women, Atkins continues to inspire with her transparency and commitment to personal growth.
