After being nominated for 7 Grammys this year, Victoria Monet makes history with the most Grammy nominations of an openly Queer black woman artist in a single year!

Since coming out in 2018, the singer-songwriter has been honest about her sexuality.

As she prepares for the upcoming Grammy Awards, the “Jaguar II” hitmaker opened up about finally feeling comfortable about exploring her sexuality in her music.

Victoria Monét discussed how people have misunderstood her orientation, especially after having a baby with John Gaines in 2020.

In her interview with CBS Morning, she expanded on misconceptions, explaining that most don’t understand that she can still be attracted to women while actively dating a man she has a child with.

“So I like to get the question a lot. ‘So since you are in a relationship with a man, do you still like girls?’ And I’m like ‘Yes, it’s just like if you’re in a relationship with your girlfriend. Do you still like girls?’ Yes, it doesn’t take away the attraction to other people. It’s a choice,” she explained to Gayle King.

Speaking on how she grapples with the pressure to conform to societal norms against her true self, Monet says these days are long gone.

“It took so long. I mean over half of my life. To feel comfortable enough to say anything. So, I feel now is the time to stand my ground on what I am and who I am,” she asserted.

Victoria Monét has received nominations for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (Jaguar II); Best R&B Album (Jaguar II); Best R&B Song (“On My Mama”); Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Hollywood”); Best R&B Performance (“How Does It Make You Feel”); Best New Artist (Jaguar II) and Record Of The Year (“On My Mama”).
