Adejoké Bakare, the pioneering chef behind London’s West African restaurant Chishuru, has secured a prestigious Michelin star, cementing her status as the first black female chef in the UK.

The recent achievement also makes her the second Black woman globally to receive this esteemed culinary recognition.

Originally launched as a pop-up venture in Brixton in September 2020, Chishuru quickly garnered acclaim for its vibrant and innovative West African cuisine.

With dishes described by food critic Jay Rayner as “full of heat, vigour, and zest,” it was evident that Bakare’s culinary prowess was destined for greatness. In September 2023, Chishuru found a permanent home in Fitzrovia, London, further solidifying its place in the city’s dining scene.

In less than six months since its relocation, Chishuru has become one of London’s most talked-about restaurants, earning praise for its exceptional cooking and unique flavor profiles.

The Michelin Guide’s recognition of Chishuru with a coveted star underscores the restaurant’s role in elevating West African cuisine and enriching the UK’s culinary landscape.

“Our Food and Drink Writer, Mel, describes the food as nothing short of spectacular,” notes the guide. “Joké and her team serve up nostalgic, home-style cooking with flavor combinations that leave a lasting impression.”

Highlighting the lunch menu’s offerings, Mel commends Chishuru’s fermented crispy rice cake with smoky mushrooms, creamy corn cake with coconut and tamarind sauce, and versatile grilled breadfruit.

Dessert delights patrons with fonio-infused ice cream and carob custard and peanut praline, culminating in a blissful culinary experience.

Chishuru’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its set menu format, simplifying the dining experience while maintaining affordability.

Priced at £75 (or $94) per person for dinner and £35 (or $44) per person for lunch (soon to be £40/$50), the restaurant offers patrons an opportunity to savor West African flavors without breaking the bank.

As Adejoké Bakare continues to redefine culinary boundaries and inspire a new generation of chefs, her groundbreaking achievement serves as a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and cultural heritage in the world of gastronomy.

With Chishuru’s Michelin star shining brightly, Bakare’s legacy is etched in the annals of culinary history, paving the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the culinary world.
