R&B singer and songwriter Mya has come out to dish on how she turned lemons into lemonade after a devastating moment in her career inspired her to take things into her own hands.
The Best of Me star revealed that after an album from her record label leaked in Japan, she eventually lost thousands of dollars, according to UnitedMasters. But rather than take her former label to court, she decided to split ways with the label
“My fourth album with a major label was accidentally released once the release date changed for the fourth time,” the 43-year-old Washington, D.C. native told The Culture in an interview. “I was given the choice by my legal representation, at the time, to either go to court, that could take over a year, and sue for the money that were owed to me because the album technically came out and legally came out, or just go independent, so I decided to go independent.”
She would later announce that she was coming out with her own record label called Planet 9, which has produced over seven compilations and helped her to launch her best-selling vegan wine called “Planet 9 Fine Wine.”
According to LIVEKINDLY, Planet 9 Fine Wine, is a “red cabernet sauvignon with plum infusions” that does “not use animal-based fining agents, which are still used in the manufacturing of some wines.”

“I had done veganism. I had done it for three years, but I wasn’t really healthy the way that I thought I would be because there’s a lot of junk food that’s vegan,” Mya told VIBE in a 2018 interview. “It’s so good. I love rice and pasta. I love bread. You can have a lot of that stuff as a vegan, but that wasn’t helping me out. I started connecting with other vegans and started seeing what their social pages look like and what “raw” was. I learned and I got to actually meet a couple people and they started educating me. I was all ears. I said, ‘Ok, Mya. You need to do better. Push yourself.’ So I did.”
