In a remarkable achievement that continues to inspire, Sherrexcia “Rexy” Rolle, Vice President of Operations and General Counsel for Western Air Limited, stands as a trailblazer in the aviation industry.
As a Black woman leading the largest privately-owned airline in the Bahamas, Rolle is a beacon of excellence and innovation in a field where diversity is still rare.
From a young age, Rolle was immersed in the world of aviation, working alongside her father, Captain Rex Rolle, a professional pilot and flight instructor, and her mother, Shandrice Rolle, an accomplished entrepreneur.
Since its founding in 2000, Western Air Limited has grown significantly, thanks in no small part to the dedication and vision of the Rolle family.
Starting as a baggage handler and rising to her current role, Rolle has achieved remarkable success before the age of 30.
Her journey has been recognized by Black Business as a testament to her exceptional capabilities and leadership. Under her stewardship, Western Air Limited has expanded its reach, operating major routes within the Bahamas and chartering flights to Haiti, with aspirations for further growth.
The idea for Western Air Limited emerged from a simple need: to address delays and interruptions in flights from their hometown of Mastic Point, Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale.
Rolle shared with Essence that what began as a single aircraft operation between San Andros and Nassau quickly evolved into a larger venture thanks to insights from aviation financiers who recognized the demand in the market.
Despite facing challenges related to race, gender, and age throughout her career, Rolle has remained steadfast and resilient. Her early experiences, including interning at an aviation and business law firm, highlighted the lack of representation in the industry. Yet, Rolle embraced these obstacles as opportunities to excel, stating to xoNecole, “I’m okay with having to be three times as good as the next person because I’m not going to let anyone keep me from living my dream.”
