Tems Becomes First African Female Artist to Hit 1 Billion Streams on Spotify

by Gee NY

Nigerian singer Tems has officially made history as the first African female artist to surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify, thanks to her contribution to Future’s 2022 hit “WAIT FOR U” featuring Drake.

The track, which samples Tems’ 2020 song “Higher” from her EP For Broken Ears, was a breakout success, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning multiple Grammy nominations.

The song also secured Tems her first Grammy win for Best Melodic Rap Performance, solidifying her status as a global powerhouse in music.

This achievement further cements Tems’ influence in the industry, as she continues to break barriers for Afrobeats and African artists on the international stage.

Tems Joins San Diego FC Ownership Group in Major League Soccer

Beyond music, Tems is also making moves in sports ownership, joining the ownership group of San Diego FC, a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise.

Announcing the partnership through her company, The Leading Vibe, Tems has teamed up with Pave Investments to support the club’s mission of fostering culture, creativity, and community in football.

She joins a growing list of high-profile investors, including actress Issa Rae, World Cup-winning footballer Juan Mata, and MLB star Manny Machado. Expressing her excitement on X (formerly Twitter), Tems highlighted her support for the club’s Right to Dream initiative, which empowers young talent:

“Proud to support SDFC’s @right2dream initiative, empowering young talent on and off the field. Can’t wait for what’s ahead @mls!”

With San Diego FC’s inaugural match set for March 1, and her continued dominance in global music, 2025 is already shaping up to be another landmark year for Tems.
