TikTok influencer Brenay Kennard recently found out just how costly infidelity can be. $1.75 million to be exact.
The North Carolina content creator, who has amassed nearly three million followers with her lifestyle and relationship posts, is now facing real-life courtroom challenges after a jury determined she was responsible for the breakdown of another woman’s marriage.
As reported by WRAL News, the jury ruled that Kennard was liable for both alienation of affection and criminal conversation. These terms essentially mean she had an affair with a married man, leading to turmoil in his family.
North Carolina stands out as one of the few states where such lawsuits can still be pursued, and Akira Montague, the wife who brought the case, came to court armed with over 700 pieces of evidence, including Brenay’s own TikTok videos and other posts that seemingly detailed the affair in real-time.
In court, Akira argued that Brenay was openly “flaunting her affair and romantic relationship in public and private places” while her marriage was unraveling. The jury sided with Akira, resulting in Brenay facing a hefty penalty, $1.5 million for alienation of affection and an additional $250,000 for criminal conversation, totaling $1.75 million.
The situation took a twist when Brenay, who chose to represent herself during the trial, claimed she had “permission” for the relationship, stating that Akira was aware that her marriage was over and had allowed the affair to occur.
However, the jury did not find her argument convincing, siding with Akira, who testified that the affair caused her emotional turmoil and disrupted her family life with her husband, Timothy Montague, and their children.
Akira’s lawyer, Robonetta Jones, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating that her client “finally received justice from losing her husband and the father of her children.”
