A promising young life was cut short on Saturday, Sept. 6, when 28-year-old Toraya Reid was fatally shot outside an apartment complex in Jackson Township, New Jersey.
Authorities say Reid, who was found near the exit of the Paragon Apartments with multiple gunshot wounds, was the victim of a homicide now linked to an alleged act of domestic violence.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 11 a.m. and discovered Reid unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Toraya Reid is the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves player Naz Reid.
Not long after the shooting, police apprehended 29-year-old Shaquille Green, also of Jackson, after spotting him running down a nearby road.
Investigators allege that Green, who had been in a romantic relationship with Reid and shared a home with her, carried out the attack. He is now charged with murder and two weapons offenses, prosecutors confirmed.
Reid’s killing has reverberated beyond her New Jersey community because she was the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid, the NBA’s reigning Sixth Man of the Year.

Still, friends and family say Toraya’s identity extended well beyond her connection to basketball fame.
Described by loved ones as resilient, warm, and deeply supportive of those around her, Reid’s death has left a painful void. Her story is also serving as a somber reminder of the ongoing crisis of intimate partner violence, which disproportionately affects women across the United States.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
Green is currently being held in custody, and prosecutors did not immediately confirm whether he has secured legal representation.
Jackson Township, located about 31 miles northeast of Philadelphia, is reeling from the tragedy as community members mourn Reid’s loss and call for justice in her case.
