Milwaukee is grieving the tragic loss of 33-year-old Brenisha Butcher, a devoted mother of four and daycare business owner.
She was shot and killed in the early morning hours of Monday, March 16, 2025.
Butcher and her younger sister, 30, were sitting inside their vehicle outside a bar on the city’s northwest side when gunfire erupted.
Her sister survived the attack, but Butcher did not.

Family and friends remember her as a hardworking entrepreneur and a loving mother who was passionate about caring for children.
“She was just full of life,” said her cousin, Mrs. Jones. “A sweet, kind girl just doing good for herself. She just started her daycare, and she loved her kids.”
A Community in Mourning
Loved ones have been left devastated by Butcher’s sudden death. They say she was not just a businesswoman but also a pillar of her community.
“She was determined to build something for her kids,” a family friend shared. “She wanted to create something meaningful, and she was making that happen. This is such a terrible loss.”
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and Milwaukee police have not yet identified any suspects. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
City Leaders Address Violence Concerns
Milwaukee Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, whose district includes the area where the shooting occurred, expressed frustration over the recurring violence near the bar and vowed to take action.
“I do intend to sit down and have a conversation with our police department to see what we can do further,” Taylor told WISN. “When you create a pattern of not taking care of and not practicing safety, and not giving the highest level of service to our community, that is definitely a problem.”
Taylor’s statement highlights growing concerns about crime in the neighborhood, with many residents calling for increased security measures and stronger accountability for businesses operating in high-crime areas.
Ongoing Investigation
As Butcher’s family prepares to lay her to rest, they are pleading for justice. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
“This family deserves answers,” said one community activist. “We can’t keep losing our women, our mothers, our daughters like this.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Milwaukee Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
