Mary J. Blige continues her reign as a creative powerhouse by turning another one of her classic songs into a film. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul is teaming up with Lifetime again to adapt her 2001 hit single “Family Affair” into a movie.

The film continues Kendra and Ben’s love story from Lifetime’s 2023 movies: Mary J. Blige’s Real Love and Strength of a Woman. Mary J. Blige’s Family Affair (working title) starts production this month with Ajiona Alexus (BMF, Acrimony,13 Reasons Why) and Da’Vinchi (BMF) returning to reprise their roles as Kendra and Ben in the third installment of their story.

The Plot

The film follows Kendra and Ben, who have moved out of the city, hoping to start a new life together. However, things aren’t as simple as they seem. Their relationship is tested by various family dynamics, particularly as Kendra faces fertility issues and tries to navigate her relationship with Ben’s son, Miles. Tensions rise further when Ben secretly helps his brother, causing strain between him and Kendra.

The situation escalates when Kendra returns to the city, reconnecting with an old friend, which forces the couple to confront their challenges head-on. As their relationship reaches its breaking point, the family must come together to help Kendra and Ben save their relationship, staying true to the themes of real love that have been the foundation of their journey.

Family Affair is executive produced by Blige through her Blue Butterfly label and Jordan and John Davis of Davis Entertainment, who also produced the two previously mentioned made-for-TV films.

Blige’s ability to translate the themes of her iconic music into compelling cinematic stories has struck a chord with audiences, and “Family Affair” looks set to continue this trend. The song, released in 2001 as part of her album No More Drama, was an anthem of self-empowerment and unity. The film is expected to carry these powerful messages forward, delving into family, relationships, and personal growth.
