Track Star Captured on Video Attacking Opponent With Baton During Heated Race Speaks Out: ‘It Was Not My Intent’

The high school track athlete at the center of a heated baton incident is speaking out, maintaining that while the video may appear damning, she never intended to harm her competitor.

“I can admit I know it looks purposeful, but I know my intentions,” the young runner said through tears. “A person by myself, nobody’s gonna believe me because I can admit from the video it does look purposeful, but I know my intentions and I would never hit somebody on purpose.”

The controversy stems from an incident during the 4x200m relay final at Liberty University, where Brookville High School junior Kaelen Tucker was struck on the back of the head with a baton, resulting in a concussion and possible skull fracture.

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) disqualified I.C. Norcom High School’s relay team for contact interference, and the matter remains under investigation.

While Tucker and her family question whether the blow was intentional, the accused runner and her family insist it was a tragic accident, exacerbated by Tucker allegedly cutting in front of her competitor mid-stride.

The athlete’s family has expressed deep regret over the incident and frustration over the backlash she has faced. “She is being vilified for something she did not do intentionally. She was running her race, and it was an unfortunate collision.”

Though the I.C. Norcom High School athletic director has issued an apology on behalf of the student, Tucker and her family have voiced concerns over a lack of a direct personal apology from the runner herself. However, the accused athlete’s family maintains that she is struggling with the weight of the situation and never intended harm.

As the VHSL continues its review, the incident has sparked broader discussions about sportsmanship, race dynamics in high school athletics, and the role of social media in shaping public perception.
