A story circulating in fashion circles claims that luxury house Hermès once declined a request from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West to purchase a rare Mini Kelly bag for their daughter, North West.
The reported refusal centers on a coveted black alligator version of the iconic Hermès Mini Kelly bag, a piece that can sell for around $80,000 on the resale market.
The account surfaced through journalist Amy Odell’s “Back Row” newsletter as part of her “Retail Confessions” series. In the report, a former employee of the Hermès boutique in Beverly Hills recalled an incident involving the celebrity couple attempting to buy the rare bag for North.
According to the former staff member, the request did not move forward. The source said that not every high-profile customer automatically receives access to the brand’s most sought-after pieces, even when they are globally recognized celebrities. The employee remembered the moment clearly, saying they were surprised when the purchase was reportedly declined.
The staffer explained that high-profile requests at Hermès can sometimes move beyond the store level and go through corporate channels. If a celebrity of significant visibility is expected to be photographed with a particular item, the request may be reviewed more carefully by the brand. The source suggested that decisions about who carries certain pieces can involve Hermès’ press or corporate offices, especially when the item could become widely seen in media or paparazzi photos.
Despite the reported refusal, North West has long been associated with luxury fashion moments. She made headlines as a child after being photographed carrying a white Hermès Birkin bag at just six years old. Years earlier, in 2014, she also decorated a Hermès Hermès Herbag with finger paint for her mother, creating a one-of-a-kind accessory that quickly caught public attention.
Kim Kardashian herself is known for owning one of the most notable Hermès collections among celebrities. Her wardrobe includes rare pieces such as the Jean Paul Gaultier Shoulder Birkin and the coveted Himalaya Birkin, a bag that can reach prices as high as $500,000 on the resale market.
According to reporting by Page Six Style, Hermès did not respond to a request for comment about the alleged incident involving the Mini Kelly bag. The story nonetheless adds another chapter to the ongoing fascination with celebrity access to some of the fashion industry’s most exclusive luxury items.
