Latto has fans doing double takes after announcing that her upcoming album, Big Mama, may also mark the end of her rap career. The Atlanta rapper shocked social media on Friday, May 8, when she revealed that the project will be her “retirement album,” leaving many fans stunned that one of rap’s biggest young stars is already talking about walking away from music.

“5/29 My retirement album Thank you for everything,” Latto wrote on X while promoting the album’s release date.

The announcement quickly spread online, with fans questioning whether the rapper was serious about stepping away from music at just 27 years old. By the time Big Mama arrives later this month, Latto will have released four studio albums, a surprisingly short catalog for an artist who has spent the last few years building herself into one of hip-hop’s most recognizable names.

The rapper first announced Big Mama on the same day she confirmed she was expecting her first child with 21 Savage. At the time, she did not mention retirement, making her latest post feel even more unexpected to fans already focused on her pregnancy news and growing family.

So far, Latto has already given listeners a taste of the project with the release of “Business and Personal (Intro)” and “GOMF,” the latter featuring GloRilla. The album follows her 2024 release Sugar Honey Iced Tea, which earned positive reviews and solid commercial success.

Despite the surprise surrounding her announcement, retirement talk in hip-hop is nothing new. Artists have famously hinted at leaving the game before eventually returning, including Jay-Z, who once claimed 2003’s The Black Album would be his final release before returning with more music a few years later.

Meanwhile, Latto has continued embracing her next chapter in public. Last month, she made a surprise appearance during Mariah the Scientist’s concert in Atlanta, stepping onstage to dance and show off her growing baby bump. Earlier this year, she also celebrated with a cheetah-themed baby shower attended by close friends and family, including Angel Reese.

Now, with Big Mama set to drop on May 29, fans are waiting to see whether Latto truly plans to leave music behind or if this is simply the beginning of a new era for the rapper as she prepares for motherhood.
