Cardi B and the world just witnessed one of the worst nightclub tragedies in recent Dominican history, with over 113 lives lost.

The Grammy-winning rapper, who proudly reps her Dominican and Trinidadian roots, is grieving alongside an entire nation after the devastating roof collapse at Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo left over 155 people injured and claimed dozens of lives, including beloved merengue icon Rubby Pérez. As news of the tragedy spread like wildfire, Cardi took to her BG Secret Society platform and Instagram Stories to pour out her heartbreak.

“I’m in literal tears scrolling down my timeline,” she wrote. “Seeing my Dominican people being rescued… some with lives and some gone.”

It’s not every day we see Cardi B, known for her brash humor and chart-topping hits, get this raw. But this moment hit differently. This wasn’t just a club collapse. This was a community shattered, families left in anguish, and a culture mourning one of its musical legends.

She went on to share how deeply the incident affected her. “I feel like every Dominican around the world is in a big hora Santa praying for survivors and praying for the ones that are gone to be in God’s Glory.”

Among those lost was Rubby Pérez, the iconic singer known as “the highest voice in merengue.” He was mid-performance when the roof caved in. Initially reported missing, he was later found alive. His manager confirmed he was rushed to the hospital but sadly didn’t survive.

“It’s so heartbreaking to see one of our iconic artists, Pérez, leave in such a tragic way,” Cardi wrote. “I’m glad tho our final memory of him was him sharing his beautiful voice to us… Sang one last time.”

And for the victims, Cardi urged fans to hold space for peace, not pain. “For the people who lost a family or a friend, don’t have bad memories. They left this earth singing and dancing… and that’s how the Lord will receive them.”

She also posted a photo of a mourning ribbon over the Dominican Republic, a small but powerful symbol of solidarity.

Our hearts go out to everyone impacted. Continued prayers and strength to the survivors and families.
