Chadwick Boseman’s Widow, Simone, Reflects on ‘Beautiful Year’ of Late Husband’s Colon Cancer Remission

More than five years after the death of Chadwick Boseman, his widow Simone Ledward Boseman is opening up about one of the most meaningful—and bittersweet—chapters of his life: the year he went into remission while achieving global stardom.

Speaking in a recent interview with the Today Show, Simone described 2018 as “a beautiful year,” recalling how Boseman’s improving health coincided with the cultural phenomenon of Black Panther.

“To see how deeply and globally impactful that film was…I don’t have any words for it,” she said. “He was so deserving of that success.”

Behind the scenes, however, the couple was quietly celebrating something even more personal.

“Fans didn’t know we were celebrating that he had a clear scan, but we were celebrating that, too,” Simone said. “It felt like we got another chance.”

Boseman had been privately battling colon cancer since 2016, when he was diagnosed with stage 3 disease. Simone said the diagnosis came as a shock, noting that the actor had initially kept his health struggles largely to himself.

“I didn’t know that he was experiencing anything until he had already been to the doctor twice,” she said, adding that symptoms appeared suddenly.

She also pointed out that colon cancer can be difficult to detect early, particularly in younger patients who may not yet be undergoing routine screenings.

Despite the diagnosis, Simone said the couple remained optimistic.

“We both felt very sure that he would make it through,” she said. “It was going to be a challenging moment, but something that he would come out on the other side of and be fine.”

That optimism was reinforced when Boseman entered remission in 2018, just as Black Panther introduced his portrayal of T’Challa to a global audience and became a landmark film in Hollywood.

However, by the end of that same year, the cancer returned and progressed to stage 4. Boseman continued working through his illness, starring in multiple films while keeping his condition private. He died in August 2020 at the age of 43.

Simone said her husband was intentional about maintaining that privacy. “Chad was not a person that would have wanted to be treated any differently because people knew that he was sick,” she explained. “The work is what was keeping him moving.”

Since his passing, Simone has continued to honor his legacy, stressing not only his achievements as an actor but also his character and impact. “Chad was more than an actor… he was a spiritual teacher,” she said in a previous tribute.

Her reflections offer a rare glimpse into the personal triumphs and struggles behind one of Hollywood’s most celebrated careers—highlighting a moment when hope, success, and resilience briefly aligned.
