President Donald Trump announced Monday that Washington, D.C. will host the 2027 NFL Draft, calling it a “major cultural milestone” and a signal of the city’s ongoing revitalization.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump was joined by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, alongside several senior administration officials. The announcement positions the NFL’s marquee offseason event in the heart of the nation’s capital, with the National Mall expected to serve as the central venue.

Mayor Bowser, a Democrat who often clashed with Trump during his first term, praised the decision as a win for the city’s economy and cultural profile.

“We believe in investing in sports because they help transform neighborhoods,” Bowser said. “The NFL bringing this event to the nation’s capital will help fill hotel rooms and restaurants. Americans from all 50 states will come to D.C. to enjoy our beautiful city and its museums.”

Bowser’s administration has spent nearly a year lobbying for the draft, working closely with the NFL and federal agencies to secure logistics and permits for what is expected to be one of the largest tourism events the city has hosted in years.

The mayor’s appearance alongside Trump marked a striking shift in their relationship. During the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s death, Bowser and Trump engaged in heated public exchanges over federal law enforcement’s response. Their newfound collaboration reflects broader efforts to align on economic development and tourism recovery in the post-pandemic era.

Trump, who has made a point of immersing himself in the sports world since returning to the White House, highlighted the draft announcement as part of a national push to celebrate American traditions.

“Bringing the draft to D.C. isn’t just about football—it’s about pride in our country, our capital, and our communities,” he said.

Since taking office for a second term, Trump has made several high-profile appearances at major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, and a UFC bout. He also made headlines last month by commenting on the NFL draft, questioning why quarterback Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round before being selected by the Cleveland Browns.

With the 2027 NFL Draft now set for Washington, officials expect tens of thousands of fans to descend on the city, further solidifying its place as a premier destination for national events.
