During a House hearing on government efficiency, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) flipped the script with a pointed and provocative critique.
She launched a segment she called “Trump or Trans?” — pointing out what she views as political scapegoating by Republicans and Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters.
The moment quickly gained attention across social media, as Crockett used the platform to challenge the narrative that transgender Americans — a group that makes up less than 1% of the U.S. population — are somehow responsible for national problems.
“This hearing has nothing to do with improving government efficiency,” Crockett said. “It’s another attempt by Republicans to distract from their demonic and disastrous policies.”
To drum home her point, Crockett directed a series of questions to National Women’s Law Center CEO Fatima Goss Graves:
“Who gutted medical research? Who started a tariff war? Who’s raising the cost of everything?” The answer to each question, she asserted, was not trans people — but President Donald Trump.
Her comments also referenced Trump’s ongoing track record of anti-transgender policies. In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order limiting federal recognition to two genders — male and female — a move that drew sharp criticism from civil rights groups.
During his administration, Trump also implemented a ban on transgender people serving openly in the military and took various steps to roll back protections for trans youth, including attempts to restrict access to gender-affirming care.
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi echoed similar sentiments in a controversial memo that sought to criminalize gender-affirming treatment, stoking further fears within the LGBTQ+ community.
Crockett’s “Trump or Trans” remarks were seen by supporters as a bold confrontation of the ongoing effort to vilify vulnerable communities while diverting attention from the broader impacts of conservative economic and healthcare policies.
