Gayle King, co-host of “CBS Mornings,” caused a stir on X after questioning the lack of diversity at President Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday.
While providing commentary on the swearing-in event, King remarked on the noticeable absence of “many people of color” as politicians, Supreme Court justices, and dignitaries gathered in the US Capitol Rotunda.
“I do not see many people of color. Does anybody else besides me observe that?” King said. “I’m fascinated by why that is?”
Norah O’Donnell, who led the network’s coverage, pointed out that the inauguration took place on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. She then highlighted the presence of several prominent Black leaders in attendance.
On X, users took to the platform to offer their views.
“Who was it that said, ‘I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”? Hmmm… can anyone remember… or was it just a dream???,’ one user wrote.
“Oh thank God someone noted it,” wrote another.
Others offered contrasting views.
“Feel free to ask Maxine Waters, Ayanna Pressley, and other black members of the House of Representatives why they refused to attend. All House and Senate members were invited,” one user commented.
“CBS doesn’t miss an opportunity to stir up controversy!!” wrote another.
Michelle Obama chose not to attend the event, sparking continued speculation about her stance on Trump and recent rumors surrounding her marriage to the 44th president.
In his inaugural address, Trump declared the start of a “new golden age of America.” One of his initial policy priorities is the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in federal institutions.
DEI remains a contentious topic. Advocates argue it addresses systemic discrimination against minorities, while critics contend it creates unfair disadvantages for white and Asian Americans.
