‘I Was a Child’: Brandy Opens Up About How Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men Pursued and Slept With Her

by Gee NY

R&B icon Brandy is sharing deeply personal revelations in her newly released memoir Phases, shedding light on a past relationship she now describes as inappropriate and emotionally complex.

In the book, the Grammy-winning artist recounts her late 1990s relationship with Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men, stating that it began when she was 16 and he was in his early 20s.

“I was a child. And he was an adult. And it’s time the world understood the difference,” Brandy writes, speaking about the relationship through a lens of hindsight and personal growth.

A Relationship Kept Secret

According to the memoir, the relationship developed after the pair collaborated on the 1994 track “Brokenhearted.” What began as a professional connection quickly became romantic, though the two allegedly kept it hidden from the public and even from Brandy’s parents.

She describes sneaking around and maintaining secrecy due to fears of backlash and potential damage to their careers.

The pair reportedly agreed to present their relationship publicly as delayed until she turned 18, despite privately being involved.

Reflection and Reassessment

Brandy details the emotional toll of the relationship, including moments she now identifies as warning signs. She writes that Morris compared her to other artists and became increasingly distant over time, requiring her to page him before communication.

Looking back, she characterizes the dynamic as one she did not fully understand at the time.

“These are the things that with hindsight you realize are wildly obvious signs of something wrong,” she writes, adding that her younger self was navigating feelings she believed to be love.

The relationship ultimately ended after she discovered he had been unfaithful.

Breaking Years of Silence

In the memoir, Brandy challenges past narratives that minimized the relationship as a teenage crush, asserting instead that she felt taken advantage of.

“The shame ends here. The silence ends here,” she writes, justifying her decision to publicly reclaim her story.

Her account contrasts with previous public comments from Morris, who has described their relationship as youthful and mutual. Representatives for the singer have not issued a new response following the memoir’s release.

Broader Conversations

The revelations have sparked renewed discussion around age gaps, consent, and power dynamics in the entertainment industry, particularly involving young artists navigating early fame.

Brandy’s memoir contributes to a growing number of high-profile figures revisiting past experiences through a modern understanding of accountability and personal agency.
