Latto is opening up about the real reason she briefly announced a “retirement” from music, revealing that postpartum depression played a major role in how she was feeling at the time.
The Atlanta rapper addressed the situation during a recent Apple Music interview released on Friday (May 29), where she sat down with Nadeska Alexis to reflect on her emotional social media post that had fans convinced she might be stepping away from music. Latto had previously written on X that her album Big Mama would be her “retirement album,” sparking widespread conversation online.
Looking back on that moment, Latto didn’t shy away from explaining what was happening behind the scenes. “Remember when we was talking about postpartum depression, good days, bad days?” she said during the interview. “That was definitely not one of the good days.”
She went on to explain that becoming a mother for the first time brought unexpected emotional challenges. Earlier this month, Latto gave birth to her first child, a daughter, with rapper 21 Savage, and she admitted that adjusting to postpartum life was more intense than she anticipated.
“Experiencing postpartum for the first time, you don’t know what to expect?” she continued. “I kind of underestimated it. That was just one of those days where I was at home and overwhelmed with the album.”
During the conversation, Latto kept it honest about how quickly her emotions can shift. “I was going through it that day. Today’s a good day. I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today. Talk to me next week again, I might say, ‘No, that shit was for real.’ So, I don’t know. I’m going through it. I crashed. It is what it is.”
Host Nadeska Alexis acknowledged the reality of postpartum struggles, telling Latto that emotional ups and downs can be part of the experience. Latto responded with humor, saying, “I’m going to try not to take it on Twitter next time.”
She also took a moment to express appreciation to her fans, acknowledging the concern that followed her original post. “I apologize for the retirement tweet,” she added during the interview.
The original comment that sparked all the speculation came earlier this month, when Latto posted on X: “5/29. My retirement album. Thank you for everything.” At the time, fans were unsure whether she was serious or simply signaling a major career moment.
Since then, Latto has also shared more personal milestones from her new chapter, including a video confirming the birth of her daughter with 21 Savage. In a separate moment following the birth, she connected with Keyanna Joseph, the mother of 21 Savage’s two older sons, Kamari and Ashaad.
Now, with her comments in context, Latto’s earlier “retirement” statement appears to reflect a difficult emotional moment rather than a permanent decision, as she continues adjusting to motherhood and life after welcoming her first child.
