Vice President Kamala Harris’ college sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), is stepping up its support for her presidential aspirations with the launch of its own political action committee (PAC).
The newly established AKA 1908 PAC aims to galvanize support and mobilize financial backing for Harris’ campaign as she seeks to make history by becoming the next President of the United States.
Alpha Kappa Alpha, one of the oldest and most influential historically Black sororities, is part of the “Divine Nine”—a prestigious coalition of Black Greek-letter organizations that wields significant influence within the Black community.
The new PAC will be allowed to accept donations of up to $5,000 from sorority members and their families, enhancing its capacity to support Harris.
This move underscores the strong connection between Harris and her sorority. She has actively engaged with Alpha Kappa Alpha and other Divine Nine groups throughout her political career.
Notably, Harris spoke at AKA’s annual convention in July and invited the Divine Nine to the White House shortly after taking office in 2021—marking a historic first meeting with a sitting U.S. president or vice president.
With the recent withdrawal of President Joe Biden from the 2024 presidential race, Harris has gained momentum and support, particularly from voters of color.
Polls indicate that she has rapidly closed the gap with former President Donald Trump, who remains a formidable opponent. Recent surveys show Harris with a slight edge, but many Democratic analysts caution against overconfidence.
Veteran strategist David Axelrod has warned that despite the surge in Harris’ support, the race remains highly competitive.
“There’s a lot of irrational exuberance on the Democratic side of the aisle right now,” Axelrod noted. “Trump is still ahead in most of the battleground states. It’s a close race, and he has the advantage.”
As Harris prepares for a potential showdown with Trump, the launch of the AKA 1908 PAC represents a strategic effort to harness the power and resources of the Divine Nine to bolster her campaign.
This initiative highlights the significant role of grassroots and organizational support in shaping the 2024 presidential race.
