Los Angeles police are urgently seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 14-year-old girl, Amoria Brown, and her three-week-old newborn, Omoria Brown.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has issued an Ebony Alert in their search, highlighting the seriousness of the situation, especially given the newborn’s need for daily medication.
Details of the Disappearance
Amoria Brown, her infant daughter Omoria, and Amoria’s sister-in-law, 15-year-old Sanaii Brown, were last seen on August 25, 2024, around 10 p.m. in the 5200 block of East Huntington Drive.
According to authorities, the three were believed to be heading toward the high desert area with family members, but their current whereabouts remain unknown.
The LAPD provided descriptions of the missing individuals to aid in their search. Amoria is described as having black hair and brown eyes, standing 5 feet 4 inches tall, and weighing approximately 140 pounds.
She was last seen wearing a multicolored shirt, gray shorts, and gray sandals. Sanaii, who has since reunited with the family, has black hair and brown eyes, stands 5 feet 1 inch tall, and weighs approximately 150 pounds.
No further details were provided about what Sanaii was wearing at the time of their disappearance.
The Ebony Alert System
This case marks one of the first uses of the newly implemented Ebony Alert in California, which became law on Oct. 8, 2023.
The Ebony Alert system was specifically designed to assist in locating missing Black youth and women between the ages of 12 and 25, a demographic historically underserved by other alert systems.
The introduction of this alert is part of broader efforts to ensure equitable response in cases involving missing persons of color.
Family’s Concern and Public Appeal
The disappearance of Amoria and her newborn has deeply concerned their family, particularly given Omoria’s heart condition, which requires daily medication.
Amoria’s guardian, Raquel Brown, expressed her distress, noting that Amoria had contacted the family to assure them they were okay. However, the situation remains dire as the baby’s health depends on receiving proper medical care.
“It’s just a lot right now; trying to take it all in, trying to process it,” Raquel said in an interview. “I just want the baby to be OK. She’s not a bad mom. I’m not going to say that she’s bad. She’s young. I can’t just expect her to change overnight, so I do want to make that clear, but I’m here to help.”
While Sanaii has returned home, the police and the family are still desperate to locate Amoria and Omoria, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Community Response
The issuance of the Ebony Alert has brought attention to the need for targeted efforts in finding missing Black youth and women. Community members and activists have praised the new alert system, hoping it will lead to more effective outcomes in such cases.
The LAPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and encourages anyone with information to contact them immediately.
