The 2018 Golden Globes‘ politically charged all-Black dress code in support of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, is still the talk of the town. The vast number of women stepping forward to share their stories of sexual harassment and abuse is growing by the day.
Before the awards show took place, R&B star, and Hollywood actress, Mary J. Blige spoke to Associated Press about the planned Golden Globes black-dress protest to raise awareness of abuses and resources available to victims. In this clip, Blige opened up about being sexually abused at home from the age of five.
“I’ve had the fight since I was five years old. I haven’t had anyone approach me like that since I’ve been in the music business. But from 5 to 17, I’ve been through hell with sexual harassment. So by the time I got into the music business, it was like, ‘Don’t touch me… or I’ll kill you.'”
While some may be shocked by Blige’s revelation, Mary has hinted to her childhood struggles through her music. Most notably, the 2006 hit single about child abuse, “Runaway Love” by Southern rapper Ludacris, where Blige provided the track with some deeply impassioned hooks. You could literally feel her pain.
Blige did not allow her experience to cripple her and has enjoyed a successful career spanning over three decades. Presently, she is at the height of her career. For her most recent movie, Mudbound, Blige was nominated for two Golden Globes and she will also be receiving her very own star on the world-renowed Hollywood Walk of Fame this month. WINNING!
