At just six years old, Sofiat Wuraola Olaide, popularly known as @ayanwura on Instagram, is taking the world by storm as one of Nigeria’s youngest female traditional talking drummers.
With her exceptional talent, Sofiat has captivated audiences, amassing a following of over 60,000 fans on Instagram, and earning accolades that belie her young age.
A Star in the Making
Sofiat began her drumming journey at the tender age of three, playing on her own at home. Recognizing her natural talent, her mother, Morenikeji Olaide, enrolled her in a drumming school when she turned four.
Since then, Sofiat has honed her craft under the guidance of her drum instructor, Mr. Samson Adeleke, who describes her as “an intelligent and focused little girl.”
“She learns at a very high speed and performs extraordinarily well compared to her peers. Sofiat’s ability to grasp lessons quickly and her passion for drumming set her apart,” Adeleke shared.
Notable Performances and Achievements
Sofiat’s drumming has earned her prominent opportunities, including a role in a Nollywood movie and a performance at Nigeria’s presidential inauguration.
She also thrilled audiences during the Day of the African Child celebration in Lagos, where she performed solo and alongside Africa’s first professional female gangan drummer, Aralola Olumuyiwa (Ara).
Her remarkable skill has positioned her as a rising star in Nigeria’s cultural and entertainment scene, with many predicting she will become one of the most influential drummers of her generation.
Big Dreams and Bigger Aspirations
Despite her young age, Sofiat is already dreaming big. She envisions herself performing on global stages like London’s O2 Arena while pursuing a career in law. “
I just found myself loving and playing drums. It’s a gift from God,” she says, determined to inspire others with her artistry.
