Meet The Harvard Grad Who Invented An Energy-Generating Soccer Ball At Just 19

by Gee NY

At just 19 years old, Jessica O. Matthews had already invented an important device that would change the way the world thinks about renewable energy.

Today, at 31, she is the founder and CEO of Uncharted Power, a global leader in sustainable infrastructure, and the creator of the SOCCKET. This energy-generating soccer ball has transformed lives in communities worldwide.

From Harvard to Global Innovator

Jessica, a Harvard graduate and Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, first conceptualized the SOCCKET during a college class project.

The soccer ball harnesses kinetic energy from play, storing it to power small devices like LED lamps. For every 30 minutes of play, the SOCCKET generates up to three hours of LED light—a game-changer for communities with limited access to electricity.

“I grew up wanting to be an inventor, but I was pushed toward more structured industries in high school,” Jessica told Essence. “When I created the SOCCKET, I was reminded of how much I loved making things—turning what wasn’t into what is. Seeing people’s lives change because of something I created was incredibly fulfilling.”

A Career Built on Innovation

Jessica’s journey from inventor to CEO has been nothing short of remarkable. After SOCCKET gained international attention, she founded Uncharted Power (formerly Uncharted Play), a company dedicated to revolutionizing renewable energy and infrastructure.

Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including being named a 2012 Toyota Mother of Invention, which provided her with a grant to scale her business.

“Being named to Forbes’ ‘30 Under 30’ was a huge milestone,” Jessica says. “But having a global brand like Toyota recognize the SOCCKET as an innovative invention that inspires social change was equally rewarding.”

Breaking Barriers in Tech

As a Black woman in the tech industry, Jessica has faced her share of challenges.

“There’s already a bias that benefits men in tech,” she explains. “Add in being a Black woman, and every conversation feels like an uphill battle. But when I succeed, people take notice because I stand out in a field where diversity is still lacking.”

Jessica’s resilience and determination have made her a role model for aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs. Her advice? “Stay humble and stay hungry. Build meaningful relationships with a tight-knit group of colleagues who will support and advocate for you.”

Beyond the Boardroom

When she’s not revolutionizing renewable energy, Jessica enjoys dancing, particularly hip-hop and lyrical styles.

She’s also a fan of Netflix and Spotify, which she uses to unwind after a long day. Her go-to power accessories? “Solid studs and a statement bracelet can take you far,” she says with a smile.

Jessica’s secret superpower? “When I wake up, I’m instantly on. There’s no groggy hour—I can jump out of bed and start problem-solving right away.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Jessica O. Matthews is proof that innovation knows no age limits. From inventing the SOCCKET at 19 to leading a global company at 31, she continues to inspire change and challenge stereotypes in the tech world.
