Popular Fast Food Chain Says Racial Slur Written on Black Woman’s Receipt was a ‘Misspelling of the Customer’s Name’

A North Carolina teenager is horrified and embarrassed after she said she was given a receipt with a racial slur written on it after ordering food from the popular restaurant chain, Chick-fil-A.

April Jackson, the mother to 19-year-old Nyiashia told WSOC that her daughter was “really, really upset and sad” after the incident, which took place at the fast food restaurant’s drive-thru.

The teen, who is Black, said that after picking up her order, she saw that the n-word was written on the receipt attached to her order.

“I’m really lost for words because I couldn’t believe that someone would write something like that about my daughter and racially profile her like that,” said Jackson.

A Chick-fil-A spokesperson has been made aware of the incident and said that after an internal investigation, the racial slur on the receipt appeared to be “a misspelling of the customer’s name,” adding that it “does not negate the impact or experience had by our guests,” according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Meanwhile, Nyiashia recalls that the employee who handed her the order gave her an odd stare to suggest that she look at the receipt stapled to her order.

“He was like, ‘You might want to look what they put your name as,'” she said. “I was just in shock I literally parked right there. I couldn’t eat the food. I was just in shock.”

The restaurant’s spokesperson has explained that it “has started additional training at his restaurant to ensure this doesn’t happen again. We sincerely apologize for the harm caused by this incident.”

But Jackson does not believe training will suffice. “You shouldn’t have to be trained to not call someone a n***a. I’m just being as honest as I can be. I want the employee fired.”

Nyiashia’s mother further added that she is pursuing legal action. Chick-fil-A told PEOPLE that a representative tried to contact her and her family “to better understand her experience and apologize for the situation,” but she told WSOC she does not intend to speak with the company until they are in front of a judge.
