Rebecca Rene Carter, a 41-year-old storage facility manager, was found dead in her apartment on February 19, with a knife still in her chest.
Authorities say her boyfriend, Travis Huff, allegedly strangled and stabbed her before calling 911 to report the crime.
Carter lived in an apartment attached to the CubeSmart storage facility where she worked.
According to a search warrant obtained by PEOPLE, officers from the Cary Police Department responded to the scene after Huff allegedly called 911 at 12:24 p.m., saying:
“There’s been a murder.”
Huff, 40, reportedly told dispatchers he and Carter had argued the previous night before going to a bar for drinks.
When they returned home, “there was pushing, arguing, and shoving,” before he “lost control” and strangled her, according to the warrant.
“She’s no longer here,” Huff allegedly told the dispatcher. “I killed her.”
Police arrived at the CubeSmart and took Huff into custody. According to the warrant, he admitted to detectives that he had strangled Carter with his hands and then stabbed her twice in the chest after believing she was already dead.
He then covered her body with a comforter and remained in the apartment, later returning with a friend to use crack cocaine while Carter’s body remained in the bedroom.
Huff allegedly tried to cover up Carter’s absence by texting her boss from her phone, claiming she was sick, according to police.
Huff has been charged with murder and is being held without bond at the Wake County Detention Center. If convicted, he could face the death penalty, ABC 11 reports.
As the investigation continues, Carter’s loved ones are mourning her tragic death. Her former colleague, Melvin Montgomery, expressed shock at the news, and her coworkers described her as having “a big heart” and being “very friendly.”
