A prominent mental health advocate, Meera Varma, is fighting for her life following a violent stabbing inside her home in Burbank that left her mother dead, authorities confirmed.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of April 20, has shocked the local community and drawn national attention due to Varma’s work alongside high-profile figures, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and media icon Oprah Winfrey, on mental health initiatives. Her mother, Arti Varma, a beloved first-grade teacher, died after sustaining multiple stab wounds.
According to the Burbank Police Department, officers responded to a distress call at a residence on North Brighton Street around 6 a.m., where they found both women critically injured.
Despite emergency medical efforts, Arti Varma was pronounced dead at the hospital, while Meera Varma remains hospitalized in stable condition. Friends and colleagues described Arti as a “bright light” and a deeply dedicated educator at Bret Harte Elementary School, remembered for her passion and commitment to her students.
Authorities have arrested Sergio Fraire, 30, in connection with the attack. He was taken into custody hours later by a SWAT team at a separate residence in Burbank without incident. Police say evidence linked to the crime was recovered during the arrest. Investigators identified Fraire as a suspect following an extensive inquiry involving witness interviews, neighborhood canvassing, and surveillance footage analysis. He is currently facing charges related to murder and attempted murder.
