Serena Williams steals the spotlight at the 2023 CFDA Awards as she grabs the Fashion Icon of the Red Carpet.
The retired tennis superstar became the first athlete to win the award, following predecessors made of the finest superstars like Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé and Zendaya.
Serena Williams just added another laurel, a fashion icon, to her long list of spectacular accomplishments, including a record-shattering athlete, entrepreneur, designer, and philanthropist.
The fashion industry’s equivalent of Oscar night was held at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan on November 6.
The tennis star rocked the red carpet in a gown worthy of her new icon status. Serena Williams looked dazzling in a bespoke black sequin dress with puffy mid-arm sleeves, a train, and a sweetheart neckline designed by CFDA Chairman Thom Browne.
The gorgeous statement gown was accentuated by her David Yurman jewelry’s “Fleur de Mer” pavé diamond and pearl and pavé cable drop earrings.
The mother of two graciously shared her childhood fashion she accepted the Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
“I knew when I was a little girl that I was different, so I explored fashion and style as a way to distinguish myself. In many ways for me, the tennis courts became my runway, and the U.S. Open was my own New York Fashion Week to express my individuality, my confidence, and most importantly, my culture.”
Tennis legend Serena Williams became a favored fashion expression, stunning the tennis court with her electrifying designs throughout her 27-year professional career.
In 2018, Serena’s sensational black catsuit she wore to the French Open catsuit was banned. French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli said the look was unacceptable and that “one must respect the game and the place.”
But this did not deter the tennis legend as she went on to launch her clothing line, “S by Serena”. She said the clothing line was intended “to inspire women to embrace their bodies and love who they are no matter their size, race or income.”
Congratulations, Serena!
