The White House has recognized Dr. Donna Stokes, a longtime physics professor at the University of Houston (UH), as a recipient of the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM).

The award, the nation’s highest honor for STEM mentoring, highlights Stokes’ unwavering commitment to shaping the next generation of scientists, educators, and innovators.

A Lifelong Dedication to STEM Education

Stokes’ journey in science began in childhood and was nurtured by supportive teachers and mentors.

Her academic potential was recognized early, earning her a physics scholarship to Southern University, where she completed her bachelor’s degree. She then pursued graduate studies at UH, earning both a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in physics before joining the faculty.

Since then, she has dedicated her career to improving student success in STEM fields, mentoring aspiring physicists, and preparing future STEM educators.

Through her work with teachHouston, UH’s STEM teacher preparation program, she has mentored countless students, ensuring they have the skills and support needed to excel in their careers.

Impact Beyond the Classroom

Beyond teaching and research, Stokes has played a pivotal role in UH’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM).

She has served in multiple leadership positions, including associate dean of undergraduate affairs and student success, and has advised student organizations such as the Astronomy Society and the Society of Physics Students.

Her dedication to mentorship is deeply personal.

“Throughout my career, I had great mentors who selflessly supported me and served as role models,” Stokes shared. “Their dedication inspired me to pay it forward and provide the same support to others on their journey in math and science education.”

Recognized Excellence

Stokes’ contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the UH Teaching Excellence Awards, the 2023 UH Honors College Outstanding Fellowship Mentorship Award, the NSF Career Award, and the National Research Council Post-Doctoral Associateship Award.

Her latest PAESMEM recognition places her among an elite group of educators who have significantly influenced STEM education nationwide.

“Professor Stokes’ enduring commitment to mentoring future leaders in science and mathematics is truly remarkable,” said UH President Renu Khator. “She’s leaving an indelible imprint on our campus and society, strengthening it for generations to come.”

A Well-Deserved Honor

The PAESMEM award, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, comes with a $10,000 prize and an invitation to Washington, D.C., for professional development events.

“All of us at NSM are extremely proud of Dr. Stokes’ latest achievement,” said NSM Dean Dan Wells. “Our college truly benefits from her expertise as a scientist, her talents as a teacher, and her willingness to mentor both students and junior faculty.”

As a champion for diversity and excellence in STEM, Stokes emphasizes the importance of recognizing mentors who inspire future scientists and educators.

“Spotlighting STEM educators, researchers, and mentors demonstrates the critical role they play in developing and encouraging students to pursue STEM degrees and careers,” she said.

With this latest honor, Dr. Donna Stokes’ legacy as a transformative mentor continues to inspire generations of students to reach new heights in STEM fields.
