A woman has gone viral on social media after sharing how she boldly “shot her shot” at a man she met in her apartment gym—now her husband.
In her viral video, Jasmine Luv-Barrett (@itsjasmineluv on TikTok) encouraged other women to take initiative when it comes to dating, saying the risk can be well worth the reward.
The woman recounted the moment in detail, beginning in May 2019 when she was 29 years old, living in Glendale, California, and ready for a fresh start. She moved into the newly built Circa apartment complex, located across from what was then the Staples Center.
Just a month later, while working out at the building’s gym, she noticed a man who caught her eye. Though initially hesitant, she told her brother about him, who identified the man as a popular YouTuber known for his car content. After confirming through social media that he wasn’t in a relationship, she debated her next move.
“I was like, you don’t slide in no man’s DMs,” she recalled. “But you 30, you about to be 30—just do it. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Gathering her courage, she sent him a direct message on Instagram that simply read: “Hey neighbor, how are you enjoying Circa?”
To her surprise, he responded, suggesting they meet on the eighth-floor amenities deck.
Their first meeting led to hours of conversation and a pool game that sealed their connection. Soon after, he asked her out on what she described as a “proper first date,” impressing her from the start.
From there, the relationship blossomed.
“I like to say I threw out the bait and he rolled it on in, baby,” she joked in her video. Within a year, he proposed. A few months later, they were married. The couple has now been happily married for four years, together for six.
Her story has resonated with thousands online, especially women who have long been told to wait for men to make the first move. In sharing her experience, she encouraged others to be bold:
“Nothing wrong with keeping it classy and cute, sliding into a man’s DMs.”
The viral moment has sparked debate about modern dating norms, with many applauding her for challenging tradition and proving that taking initiative can lead to lasting love.
“She is right but most women in our community are scared of rejection so they don’t even attempt the shoot they shot but they will have kids and sleep with inadequate man that approach them 🤦🏿♂️,” one person commented.
