by Gee NY

Dr. Vonnya Pettigrew, Hon.D., has made history by reportedly becoming the first Black woman in Maryland to own an entire block on Baltimore’s waterfront.

Dr. Pettigrew’s recent acquisition of a commercial property in Canton Harbor for $2.2 million marks a significant milestone. The property, located at 2220 Boston Street, spans 14,400 square feet and occupies an entire block.

This purchase is set to bolster her media empire, Root Branch Media Group.

Dr. Pettigrew’s background in communications is impressive, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.

She gained valuable experience interning as a speechwriter under President Bill Clinton and working for a political show produced on Capitol Hill. Her passion for television and film led her to create content for TV One and the Discovery Channel.

In 2006, she founded Root Branch Media Group, inspired by her family’s legacy in South Carolina. The company provides services including video production, motion graphics, creative development, and more.

Root Branch Media Group is committed to supporting small business owners and youth pursuing careers in film and digital media.

The company partners with school districts and youth organizations to create pathways into the industry and offers training to entrepreneurs.

The recent property purchase was financed by the Reinvestment Fund, without reliance on investors, grants, or programs. The building will support the media production arm of Root Branch Media Group and other ventures, including Root Branch Press Coffee & Co., Root Branch Office Solutions, and Root Branch Arts and Outreach Institute Inc.

Looking to the future, Dr. Pettigrew aims to expand her media arts hub, potentially acquiring properties in other parts of Baltimore and urban communities, including her hometown of Philadelphia, PA.
