In an exciting expansion of her creative talents, celebrity fashion designer Jovana Louis has officially opened The Mapu, the first Haitian and Caribbean fine dining restaurant in Southeast Asia.
Located in Vietnam, The Mapu introduces a unique fusion of Caribbean culinary traditions and the vibrant cultural atmosphere of the region.
The restaurant, co-founded by Jovana and her husband, former Haitian Ambassador to Vietnam, His Excellency Jean Lesly Benoit, celebrated its grand opening on Sept. 21, 2024.
A Taste of the Caribbean in Vietnam
Named after the resilient “mapou” tree, a symbol of strength and tradition in Haitian culture, The Mapu offers diners an immersive experience that blends authentic Caribbean flavors with modern Vietnamese influences.
Jovana Louis, known for her work in the fashion world under the brand Jovana Louis, described the inspiration behind The Mapu as a natural extension of her creative journey.
“The idea for The Mapu came from my husband and me,” shared Jovana. “Lesly has lived in Vietnam for over a decade, and we both felt a deep connection to this country. Combining that connection with my Caribbean heritage sparked the concept. As a designer, I’ve always believed in blending cultures, and this restaurant allows us to infuse Caribbean flavors with the warmth and enthusiasm we’ve encountered in Vietnam.”
The Grand Opening
The opening of The Mapu was a star-studded affair, attended by prominent figures from Vietnam’s entertainment and business communities, including actors Truong Ngoc Anh and Bang Di, as well as businessman Truong Quoc Nam.
Hollywood actress Dania Ramirez also flew in to join the festivities. Guests were treated to Caribbean delicacies amidst an ambiance that resembled a tropical Caribbean forest, complete with palm trees, lush greenery, and a swimming pool.
Authentic Caribbean Cuisine
The Mapu’s menu reflects a dedication to authentic Caribbean cuisine. Signature dishes include Griot—fried pork marinated with lime and spices—a Haitian favorite, as well as Jamaican Oxtail, slow-cooked and rich with bold, savory flavors.
Another standout is Riz Djon Djon, a Haitian black mushroom rice dish that offers a taste unique to Caribbean culinary traditions. While the flavors are rooted in the Caribbean, local Vietnamese ingredients are incorporated, ensuring freshness and a delightful fusion of cultures.
“Interestingly, both Caribbean and Vietnamese cuisines share an appreciation for bold, fresh flavors and the use of herbs and spices,” said Jovana.
A Cultural Hub
Beyond food, The Mapu offers a multi-sensory experience, particularly during weekend evenings when live Caribbean music, international DJs, and Afro-Latin beats fill the air.
The restaurant plans to host regular live performances, cultural exhibitions, and even fashion shows curated by Jovana herself. These events will feature emerging designers from both the Caribbean and Vietnam, bridging the two cultures in a creative and collaborative space.
The Mapu is not only a culinary destination but also a cultural hub, celebrating Caribbean heritage through food, music, fashion, and art. The restaurant also seeks to partner with local Vietnamese artists for live painting sessions and exhibitions.
A New Chapter for Jovana Louis
Balancing her successful fashion career with the restaurant, Jovana credits the teamwork between herself and her husband for making The Mapu a reality.
“Lesly has been instrumental in creating the menu and overseeing day-to-day operations,” she shared. “The fact that we’ve been able to build this dream together, each contributing our strengths, is what makes this project so special.”
As the first authentic Haitian and Caribbean fine dining experience in Southeast Asia, The Mapu is already making waves in Vietnam, offering a fresh and exciting perspective on global cuisine.
