New Bodycam Footage Sheds Light on 2025 Fatal Shooting of Chicago Officer Krystal Rivera

by Gee NY

Newly released body camera footage is offering a clearer, yet deeply troubling, look into the fatal shooting of Krystal Rivera, a Chicago police officer who died during a foot pursuit in June 2025.

Rivera, 36, was killed on June 5 after being struck by gunfire from her partner, Carlos Baker, as the two officers chased a suspect into an apartment building.

The footage, now public, has brought even more attention to the tragic incident, especially on the moments leading up to the shooting and the actions taken afterwards.

Chaotic Pursuit Turns Fatal

Per the details of the video, Rivera and Baker were attempting to stop a man who fled into a residential building. The officers pursued him up a staircase, moving quickly through tight quarters.

The situation escalated when Baker kicked open a door inside the building. Footage shows another individual inside, appearing to point what looked like a rifle toward the doorway.

In the chaos that followed, Baker stumbled backwards through the doorway and fired a shot behind him, striking Rivera, who was positioned just behind him on the stairs.

The sequence unfolded in seconds, highlighting the confusion and high-pressure environment officers often face during close-quarters encounters.

Immediate Aftermath Captured on Video

Moments after the shot was fired, Baker can be heard on the radio reporting “shots fired at police” before asking Rivera, “Krystal, you good?” He then calls for emergency medical assistance.

The footage also shows Baker dragging Rivera down the staircase as additional officers arrive and attempt to render aid. Rivera was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from a gunshot wound to her back.

Family Raises Concerns Over Investigation

Following the release of the footage, Rivera’s family has publicly questioned both the circumstances of the shooting and the handling of the aftermath.

In a wrongful death lawsuit filed in December 2025, the family alleges that Rivera and Baker had been involved in a romantic relationship that had recently ended. The lawsuit suggests that Baker may have been struggling emotionally in the wake of that breakup.

Attorney Antonio Romanucci, who represents the Rivera family, has also raised concerns about Baker’s response after the shooting. He alleges that Baker failed to provide adequate medical aid and did not properly communicate to dispatch that Rivera had been struck by gunfire.

Ongoing Investigation and Department Action

The Chicago Police Department relieved Baker of his police powers on August 15, 2025, pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges as of now, and the case remains under active review.

The release of the bodycam footage is expected to play a central role in determining whether departmental policies were followed and whether further action will be taken.

Broader Questions on Officer Safety

Rivera’s death has reignited conversations about officer safety protocols, particularly during high-risk pursuits in confined environments. It also raises complex questions about communication, situational awareness, and the potential risks of friendly fire in rapidly evolving scenarios.

For Rivera’s family, however, the focus remains on accountability and clarity.
