Aaliyah’s legacy continues to shine bright. On what would have been the late singer’s 46th birthday, Mattel released a limited-edition Barbie doll in her honor, and it quickly became a collector’s item.
As soon as the limited-edition Barbie doll inspired by the late singer was released on January 16, fans quickly turned this into a moment of celebration, selling out the $55 collectible within hours of its release on the Mattel Creations website.
The Aaliyah Barbie doll, dressed in an outfit reminiscent of her iconic “One in a Million” music video, features a black faux-leather ensemble consisting of a crisscross lace-up crop top with a mesh-style design paired with a sleeveless cropped faux leather jacket featuring crisscross straps on the arms for added detail. The Barbie’s bottom was covered in high-waisted faux leather pants with lace-up details in the front.
The whole look was accessorized with Aliyah’s signature sunglasses and straight, sleek hair.
A crisscross lace-up crop top with a fishnet or mesh-style design gives it an edgy and stylish appeal.
The Barbie design team worked closely with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, to develop the outfit inspired by the one she donned in her 1996 music video “One In A Million.”
“Today, on Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie honors the Princess of R&B’s unmatched legacy as a once-in-a-generation talent,” the official Barbie account posted to Instagram on January 16. “A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, the Aaliyah Barbie doll remembers her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations.”
Although the doll boasts a trendy appearance, it represents much more than mere aesthetics. Her second album, “One In A Million,” established Aaliyah as a formidable presence in the music industry, enabling her to achieve a double platinum certification within a year of its launch. With production by Timbaland and Missy Elliott, the album included popular tracks such as “If Your Girl Only Knew,” “Hot Like Fire,” and the enticing title song “One in a Million.”
Aaliyah’s life was unfortunately ended at the age of 22 due to a plane crash in August 2001, creating a significant void in the music industry. Nonetheless, Mattel hopes that the doll may have contributed to mending some of the lingering grief.
As we celebrate her 46th birthday, it’s clear that Aaliyah will forever be “One in a Million.”
