Brittney Griner made headlines this week after correcting a reporter who incorrectly referred to her as a mother following the birth of her son.
Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle, welcomed their first child on July 8; the 33-year-old athlete revealed the news on Friday on the “She Knows Sports” podcast.
Brittney Griner, who made headlines in 2022 when she was arrested in Russia for cannabis possession, revealed that her son was born on July 8. The couple had previously stated that they planned to name their child Bash.
Griner’s newfound happiness comes after spending nearly a year in Russia after being unfairly sentenced to nine years in prison for drug smuggling in 2022.
Griner, who is married to Cherelle Griner, welcomed their son via surrogacy earlier this month.
During a post-birth interview, a reporter mistook Griner for a “mother,” prompting the athlete to modify.
Griner corrected the CBS News correspondent who had said, “You’re about to be a mom!” She informed her that her wife Cherelle had already delivered the baby and preferred to be called “Pops.”
“That’s my man. He is amazing,” Brittney said, adding that their son weighed 7 pounds and 8 ounces. “They said as soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. That’s literally what happened.”
The WNBA star revealed that she is Bash’s biggest fan and is constantly taking photos of him. “My whole phone has turned into him now,” Griner told CBS Sports.
The baby arrives as Griner prepares to play in Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game before traveling to Paris with Team USA to battle for their eighth consecutive gold medal at the Summer Olympics.
“It kind of sucks because I have to leave, but at the same time, he will understand,” said Griner.
The two-time gold medalist will travel to the 2024 Paris Olympics in the coming week.
