The wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner is officially an attorney!
Cherelle Griner was officially named a lawyer over the weekend and celebrated with her wife and other loved ones in tow.
“There aren’t enough words for me to express how abundantly proud I am of you baby,” Brittney wrote on Instagram. “To be able to see first hand the hard work, determination, and passion you had during this journey of becoming an attorney! Congratulations Attorney Cherelle Griner.”
Cherelle graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law last spring while her wife was serving a stint in a Russian prison after being caught with cannabis oil in her luggage while at an airport in the country. She said that the road to law “didn’t come easy” and confessed that she “almost chose not to do it,” according to a caption she posted when she announced the news.
Cherelle began studying at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham in August 2019 and graduated in May 2022 with honors, according to her LinkedIn page.
“Final grades dropped, I’ll be graduating law school with honors (cum laude)! This was no easy feat, and truthfully I didn’t even know I could do it,” Cherelle wrote.
“Best believe, I’ll never doubt me again,” she continued. Cherelle also added that her degree comes from a school she’s immensely proud to have attended. “I didn’t just go to law school — I went to one of THE 6 HBCU law schools remaining! The way my ancestors are smiling.”
Behind the scenes, both Cherelle and Brittney have been staunch advocates for Americans currently being held in prisons abroad. Most recently, they have pleaded with the Biden administration to help Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovitch return home after being detained in Russia recently.
“Our hearts are filled with great concern for Evan Gershkovitch and his family since Evan’s detainment in Russia,” the Griners wrote in an Instagram post. “We must do everything in our power to bring him and all Americans home.”
They continued: “We are grateful for President Biden and his administration’s deep commitment to rescue Americans. We celebrate their recent successful efforts to bring home Jeff Woodke and Paul Rusesabagina. Every American who is taken is ours to fight for and every American returned is a win for us all.”
