Viola Davis and Michael B. Jordan created one of the most talked-about moments of the 2026 Actor Awards when Davis’ excitement announcing Jordan’s first win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role quickly went viral.
Michael B. Jordan, 39, took home the award for his performance in Sinners during the ceremony held March 1 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The event, hosted by Kristen Bell, featured a competitive field that included Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Jesse Plemons. Jordan appeared stunned as his name was revealed, having edged out Chalamet in the category.
Viola Davis, 60, opened the envelope and reacted instantly, letting out several triumphant yells before announcing Jordan as the winner. Her unfiltered joy became an instant highlight of the night, circulating across social media as viewers replayed her celebratory moment.
Backstage, Davis embraced Jordan in a heartfelt hug. Samuel L. Jackson joined them as Jordan processed the win, still visibly shellshocked from the announcement.
When he stepped to the podium, Jordan used his acceptance speech to thank his mother, Donna Jordan, acknowledging the sacrifices she made while supporting his early acting ambitions. He recalled how she drove him back and forth to New York for auditions during financially difficult times.
“Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York,” he said, locking eyes with her in the audience as she fought back tears. “When we didn’t have enough money to go through the Holland Tunnel, when we were looking for gas money, parking spaces, when I went up there for my auditions.”
Jordan also thanked his longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler, who received an Oscar nomination for writing and directing Sinners. He made a point to recognize his castmates Wunmi Mosaku, Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, and Miles Caton, along with everyone who contributed to the film.
Though he admitted he “wasn’t expecting this at all,” Jordan expressed appreciation for his fellow nominees, acknowledging the strength of the category.
