Desiree Childs was walking back home with a friend in Pontiac, Michigan, at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, when disaster hit.
The tragedy struck when a series of gunshots were fired from a passing vehicle, resulting in Desiree sustaining a gunshot wound to her chest. Fortunately, her friend remained unharmed.
Nicole Jones, Desiree’s mother, expressed the surreal nature of the situation, saying:
“The tragedy doesn’t feel real, but I know it’s real because I saw her lifeless body yesterday.” Her voice was filled with tears.
Local law enforcement is actively investigating this tragic incident, although no arrests have been made as of now.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard has urged the community’s cooperation, stating:
“Please assist us in finding answers to this senseless loss of a young life. If you possess any information, regardless of its magnitude, please come forward to help us bring justice for this young lady. Your identity will remain anonymous.”
In a bid to encourage potential informants, a reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest in connection with Desiree’s death. Authorities have requested anyone with information to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
The family has created a GoFundMe page. It says:
We are creating this page because we are currently living our worst nightmare. Myself, my daughter’s father and Desiree’s siblings are struggling to get through this moment. Please any help will help us in the stress of a burial and financials. Desiree’ was taken from us way too soon, senseless reasons! Tragically, lost her life to gun violence this past Saturday on her way home. Beautiful inside and out, she was just beginning her life! Anything will help us! My baby will be FOREVER 16!!!
